transparent marrow
A short piece I wrote for solo guitar. The rough harmony and structure was based off of a song I’ve learned from someone I play with, but things ended up diverging from there later on. The piece is meant to be played in free time, even though smaller sections of it can be aligned to a beat if necessary. It was recorded in a continuous take, and minor edits to the volume envelope were made to soften a few heavier attacks.
Opeth - Dirge for November (outro)
The final two minutes of the song, this somber melody can teach some interesting fretting, and is concise enough to be a good piece to help practice consistency at various tempo levels. The last note in bar 3 can be made to ring alone consistently by muting the sixth string with a light touch of the middle finger. My recording was made in a continuous take, and short filters were added at two points to reduce unwanted fret noise.
Opeth - Patterns in the Ivy
The two-minute piece leading up to the title track of Blackwater Park. Having few unique parts, it can make for a good opportunity for dialing in the details of how you play it. My recording of it was made in four parts, then pieced together with slight alignment in an off-beat place or two. Some small volume and filter cuts were also made in a few places. The original song can be played in E standard, this version is in D standard.
The theory behind the song is also interesting, you can read my interpretation of it here.
Guthrie Govan - Wonderful Slippery Thing
The tablature for this track from Erotic Cakes contains my tweaks upon another version made for the sake of both accuracy and playability. It’s an incredible groove, and its smooth, swift leads were really fun to practice. Maybe not at full tempo, and maybe without the tapped parts, but it’s still a good one to practice for consistency at increasing speeds.
